Two new canvases by Treglown came in this week. First is the design by Charley Harper, Trumpeter Swan. So clean and graphic. With little time if any to stitch my fix with color and texture is to walk around the store and pick threads. The swan was easy to think of in silk, the color for the wing isn’t a perfect match to the canvas but I prefer the pink tinge (reminds me of seashells with the white and grey). Annabelle’s Playhouse worsted wool offered the most perfect soft grey. The wool will make the silk threads really shine, and is a perfect thread for pillows. Knowing wool is not everyones first thread of choice I looked and looked for alternatives. I was surprised that no other thread has that soft perfect shade of grey. In the upper left corner you can see the thread kit does include some skeins of vineyard silk that is the closest match. I think the two used together in a small scale stitch would be quite nice. Black silk lame for the beak, Splendor for the small accents, and Oriental linen for the small patch of sand. Since it is a beach piece there has to be some bit of sparkle so Caron collection snow has the perfect shade of grey with a warm sparkle that can be used for the “water” divided from the upper background with a line of silk lame in white.

With admiration for the Native American culture I was happy to find this piece, perfect as a bolster pillow, a tray or stool cover. Somehow wool seems right for a piece with an Indian influence. The threads are a mix of wools which can be great fun. The black is also an Annabelle playhouse wool, I like it because its not a harsh strong black but “weathered” looking, below it looks blacker than it is. Love love Painters thread and they have a color Klee which has all the colors of the piece, this can be used in the deeper of the three brown shades. Close in value but a bit lighter I selected a hand dyed lambswool (this shade is used within the red areas). For the red is Watercolours, I think this cotton offers a nice transition from the matte textured appearance of wool to the soft sheen of the Painters thread. The areas of background, the lightest value in the piece is shown with Vineyard Merino wool. Thanks for letting me rant about the thread choices.
